With his auburn hair and lean build, Kierland Scott looks more man than lycan. But his wolf instincts are aroused by the gray-eyed Morgan Cantrell. Not because of her beauty, but because of her long-ago betrayal, a fateful choice that made their love impossible.

Now, however, the two Watchmen must team up, leaving the placid Lake Country for the forests of Scandinavia. To rescue Kierland's brother, they must track a vampire—and use their combined shape-shifting sensitivities in a battle that will take them beyond death. As the two learn to seek together, they begin to understand the history that has driven them apart. But they will have to overcome death itself, if their shared passion is to have a chance.

This is an action packed, fast paced thriller of a romance.

There is a war raging, between the good:  vampires, werewolves and assorted other paranormals; and the bad:  the Casus, the Kraven, the Death-Walkers; and the Collective:  a group of humans intent on wiping out paranormal beings of all kinds. This series tells the stories of the battles and the people who fight them.

Ten years is a long time to deny your feelings. Yet that is exactly what both Morgan Cantrell and Kierland Scott have done. Kierland is A Watchman, a warrior fighting to save his friends, and paranormals, and so is Morgan. When she comes to tell Kier that his brother has headed off to the Wasteland in search of a missing witch, Kier wants to take off and find him. The last thing he wants or needs is Morgan along. He has spent the last ten years avoiding her. But now, she is the only one that can lead him to Kellan.

Morgan realizes Kier hates her, has hated her for a long time, but she is his only link to Kell, and she refuses to give up. But things aren’t always what they seem, and by the end of their journey, everything becomes clear. Can Morgan discover why Kierland hates her? Will she be able to be close to him, feeling what she does for him? Can these two find their way through the misconceptions to find the truth?

I love the world that Rhyannon Byrd has created, and the many different paranormal beings. The character development is fantastic, and the tension and undercurrents are woven throughout the story. I admit that I started this book at a disadvantage. This would have been a bit more enjoyable had I read the first four books in the series, in order to know more of the history of the conflict these characters are engaged in. But it is enjoyable on its own merits, and I fully intend to read the others in this series.

Morgan is an interesting character. She is strong, sassy and determined to prove she can fight with the Watchmen. But she has been keeping a secret, and it could end up getting both of them killed. But her spirit and determination will win out and I like that about her. She fights hard, and she also tries hard to hide her love for the sexy and unattainable Kierland.

Kierland is strong, handsome and determined to keep away from Morgan. I found him to be an honorable person, determined to find his brother, no matter the cost. He is sexy and yet not conceited, just confident. I like that in a hero. He thinks he can get Morgan out of his system, but finally realizes he can’t.

I love the way Ms Byrd has put these two together. In the middle of a war, she brings two people together that must learn to trust before they can love. But once they realize the depth of that love, they both become stronger for it. The war may continue, but these two finally get their happy ever after.
