Review: The Playboy's Plain Jane

The Playboy's Plain Jane
by Cara Colter

The playboy

Good-looking and confident, sports hero Dylan McKinnon simply has that indefinable thing that makes him irresistible to the opposite sex.

His plain Jane

Florist Katie Pritchard knows all about Dylan's effect on women—he's her best customer! And the wary divorcĂ©e is captivated by his charm, in spite of herself.

A perfect partnership?

They seem an unlikely couple. They are. But Katie realizes there's more to this playboy than meets the eye.

I have to admit to disliking the whole "plain jane" gimmick, where a woman hides her great beauty by wearing ugly clothes and I almost didn't choose this book. Truthfully, I didn't chooose it, my very young daughter did and I am indebted to her. This was one of the most emotionally charged romances I've read in a very long time.

Both Katie and Dylan have been hurt by love, in very different ways. They respond to the pain differently, as well. Katie withdraws from the world, hides herself away in her flower shop and lets life pass her by. Dylan, on the other hand, chooses to date wildly inappropriate women, most of whom don't last a month. Katie is well aware of his wild ways because she's the one who sends out the bouquets -- four in total from the first blush of romance to the one apologizing for breaking up.

Needless to say, if she ever were going to take a chance again, it wouldn't be with a playboy like Dylan. Circumstances arrive, though, to make their constant interactions necessary and they both begin to realize that neither is what they thought.

Katie was so badly wounded and there was one line that made me cry, it hurt so badly to hear her say it. Dylan has such a deep capacity for love, but he's afraid, and doesn't want to do to any woman what he perceives was done to someone he loves.

This novel affected me deeply, and I cried for this couple more than once. In fact, I was in tears as I turned the last page. I can't recommend it enough for people who like a sweet, heartfelt romance.
