Toni Giovanni is a thief...although she prefers to call it the high-risk recovery business. Her current job feels suspiciously easy—until a mysterious artifact draws her into an ancient prophecy and binds her soul to a spirited dragon named Amethyst.

But Toni isn't quite ready to be taken over by a dragon, even if Amethyst's appetite for sexy archaeologist Dr. Ben Davis mirrors Toni's own. And she's got a big problem on her hands: turns out the prophecy predicts that dragons will end the world...and there are many more dragons out there.

Toni's going to need all the help she can get.

This is a wonderful beginning to the Amethyst trilogy from L. Shannon.

Hired to retrieve an ancient artifact from an archeological dig, Toni Giovanni does her research carefully. She didn’t get her reputation as a top “high-risk recovery agent” by being careless. She also possesses the uncanny ability to blend with the shadows, rendering her more or less invisible. Watching Dr. Ben Davis, the sexy archeologist who uncovered the very piece she is supposed to acquire, she develops an attraction for him. When things go awry, and she becomes bound to the dragon that had been trapped inside one of the medallions she was supposed to recover, life becomes very strange for Toni and Ben. Can they escape the evil vampires after Toni’s dragon self? Will Ben look past the dragon to find the woman who shares it? Can they find a way to release Amethyst, the dragon, or are Toni and Amethyst forever bound?

I love the characters is this one. Toni is a thief of the highest caliber, although she prefers the title of high-risk recovery agent. She is smart, courageous and daring, with just a touch of the magical about her. I enjoyed her surreptitious observations of Ben in the camp, and her growing attraction to the archeologist. And I loved that Ben was more than just a handsome hunk in this. I liked that Toni was as attracted to his mind as much as she was to his body. These two are fun together, even when Toni is thinking that Ben is only interested in Amethyst. And Amethyst has such a sweet personality, for a dragon. She is a victim, as she has been imprisoned for so long in the amulet, but still she doesn’t intend harm.

There are several interesting surprises in this one, and they make the story very exciting and fast paced. I am looking forward to more in this world, and applaud the originality of L. Shannon’s story.
