Newly single, Tilly Cole impulsively accepts a job offer in a small town as a “Girl Friday.” Fun job, country house, fresh start, why not? But soon she finds herself in a hotbed of gossip, intrigue, and rampant rivalry for the town’s most desirable bachelor—Jack Lucas.
Rumors of Jack’s “love ’em and leave ’em” escapes abound, and Tilly decides to do the mature, sensible thing... avoid Jack at all cost. But the more time Tilly spends with Jack, the more the rumors just don’t make sense. Tilly doesn’t know what to believe... and Jack’s not telling.
Rumor Has It is an absolutely delightful and refreshing story readers are bound to enjoy. Equal parts humor and romance, author Jill Mansell manages to maneuver between several characters to create a story that is heartfelt and endearing, yet at times sad and somber. You get a splash of everything in this book, and let me just say, I stayed up all night just to finish it.
The story revolves around several cast members, with the newly single Tilly Cole being the focal center. She’s moved to a small town to take a position as a girl Friday and be closer to her dearest friend, Erin. The job is unique to say the least. Max recently divorced his movie star wife and his daughter, Lou, lives with him. He needs someone to help him care for a pre-teen that can live in his residence and ensure life continues on upended, while Lou needs a woman’s hand around the place.
Shortly after Tilly’s arrival, she discovers that gossip is a way of life in Roxborough. Everyone knows everyone else’s business, and worse, her best friend, Erin, has fallen in love with the soon-to-be ex-husband of one of the loudest – and abrasive – residents of them all. However, it’s her first meeting with the gorgeous Jack Lucas that sets her on heel. He’s everything a woman could possibly want, and with his reputation, it seems he has no problem giving them all they ask for. As Tilly struggles to deny her attraction, Jack continues chipping away at her armor, and in a gossip mill that never sleeps, secrets are bound to be revealed.
Rumor Has It is one of those stories that have so much going on you can’t possibly get bored. All of the characters will engage you, keeping you up well past bedtime. I couldn’t decide what I enjoyed most – Tilly and Jack, Erin and Fergus, Max and Lou, Kaye and Parker. The truth is there are so many wonderful subplots, all of which are orchestrated to come together exactly when they need to, that it’s impossible to choose just one to love. There are moments of laughter, of tears, of grief, and of joy, and the balance is maintained beautifully.
A definite must for the TBR list and an absolute Best Book. Jill Mansell is a new author to me, but she won’t be for long. Her style of writing is very distinct and lovely, and found myself skimming back through the pages when I finished as I wanted more. Tilly and Jack sure do leave an impression, and I couldn’t help but envision what would happen as the lights faded to black.
Be sure not to miss this enchanting story. It has everything you could possibly want and more.
