Ann Foster is alone in the world, looking for any way to augment her college bank account. Her dream is to study archeology. Taking an extra job as a dog walker, she’s led to the old English manor known as Darkstar.

Cade Maguire and his sister Maggie have a dog in their household that needs tending. Ann comes to them highly recommended. She’s so focused on accruing funds for her education that she won’t ask questions concerning her employers’ unusual nighttime schedule.

But Ann soon finds herself embroiled in a dangerous, mythic world. Her bosses are far from normal. They have secrets that are thousands of years old and one of those secrets has come back to haunt Cade. Ann soon finds herself in the middle in a vampire battleground that’s fueled by revenge. Since she’s now a member of the Darkstar household, there’s a target on her back. For her, there’s no place to run or hide. Death may be a sunset away.

Ann has always had a passion for history, but she soon unearths a secret bigger then she’d ever dared to imagine.

Ann desperately needs money if she’s ever going to be able to attend college. The job Cade and Maggie Maguire offer could help her make that dream a reality. However, the more time Ann spends at Darkstar Manor, the more she becomes suspicious of Cade and Maggie’s nighttime schedule. Ann love’s Maggie like a sister, but she isn’t so sure what to think about Cade. During Ann’s job interview, she and Cade got off on the wrong foot and Ann has sworn to avoid him as much as possible, but she can’t help her growing attraction to the enigmatic man. Cade’s attraction to Ann is unlike anything he’s ever felt before. He soon finds himself sharing erotic dreams with Ann, but dreams won’t keep either of them satisfied for long.

Ann is truly a passionate heroine. She’s very smart and independent. Since her parents died in a tragic accident, she has been alone with nothing but her love of history to keep her going. The entire focus of her life is trying to earn enough money to go to college and study archeology, leaving little time for friends and romance. Cade is the most puzzling man she’s ever met. At first she is repulsed by his arrogant attitude, but she soon finds there is much more to Cade then meets the eye. Ann soon finds herself hopelessly in love, but once she discovers she must become a vampire in order to be with him, Ann isn’t sure if that’s the kind of life she wants. Will she embrace a chance at true love or run away and risk being hunted down by other guardians?

Cade is definitely an intriguing hero. At first he seems to be nothing more than a chauvinistic man with an overactive sex drive. However, underneath the tough exterior is a very lonely man. Cade loves his sister Maggie deeply, but something has always been missing in his life, a soul mate. Cade sees Ann as a woman he could spend eternity with but worries that he’s ruined any chance of being with her by behaving so poorly during their first meeting. Can Cade convince Ann that first impressions aren’t everything? Will Ann accept him once she learns what he is?

I enjoyed reading Darkstar Guardian. Not only are the characters interesting and the love scenes steamy, but Ms. Sams’ portrayal of vampire life is thought provoking. I recommend it to any fan of paranormal romance.
