After a twelve-hour shift in a busy emergency room, Janet O’Brien is beat. Her last patient arrives unconscious and naked. She’s lead to believe he’s a psyche patient off his meds. However, once he awakens, Janet is charmed by his million-dollar smile and agrees to give him a ride home.
Werewolf, Max Ritter notices the sassy nurse when he wakes after a night under the full moon. Unfortunately, his archrival is drawn to Janet as well. In order to keep her out of harm's way, he opts to keep her close. When the chemistry between them sparks, Max discovers a completely new reason to keep Janet safe.
When a man arrives in the ER, naked and unconscious, Janet cares for him as she would any other patient. Unfortunately, his looks are too masculine to ignore, as are sizeable portions of his anatomy. Poised to place a catheter, she’s shocked when a husky and alluring voice ponders if they should be on a first name basis before she starts. Embarrassed and frazzled, she attempts to remain professional, but finds that the mysterious man is impossible to resist. Before she knows it, she’s agreeing to give him a ride home after he signs his release papers to leave the hospital…
Max has woken up dazed and disoriented on more than one occasion, but never has he done so at a hospital, with a beautiful face hovering over him as she handles his most “intimate” parts. As he acclimates to his surroundings, he recognizes a threatening werewolf marking the luscious nurse Janet for his own. Determined to keep her safe, Max manages to convince Janet to give him a lift home. Once there, he sets a plan into motion to protect her at all costs. The only thing he doesn’t anticipate is the allure of the breathtaking female, or the irresistible temptation she presents…
Before The Moon Rises is a werewolf story that begins in a unique way, offering the reader something new, fresh, and exciting. Let’s face it, how many times have you read a werewolf tale in which the shifter ends up in the ER following a mishap that leaves him entirely naked? Author Catherine Bybee has a witty voice, and it comes through in her characters. As the set-up is both comical and entertaining (the first scene with Janet and Max had me in stitches), I quickly settled in to enjoy the ride.
When you are first introduced to Janet, she’s saucy and clever, which are wonderful traits to have in a heroine. As anyone knows, it takes a special kind of person to work in the high stress world of emergency medicine, and she fits the mold perfectly. Max, on the other hand, is mysterious and sexy, and lures you in with the question of who he is, why he was found naked and unconscious, and most importantly, why he perceives Gorman as such a threat to Janet. So many intriguing elements are brought into play, and as our hero and heroine travel to Max’s lush and impressively secured home, you’ll cling to the pages in anticipation of what’s to come. Unfortunately, the answers to many questions are slow in the coming, and as the build-up continues, the first half of Before The Moon Rises lulls as a result.
The attraction between Janet and Max is always present, but combined with the subplots which are alluded to versus explained, you feel as if you’re missing a vital piece of the puzzle. It is at the half-way mark that everything begins to fall into place and the pace picks up. From then on, the story is a pleasure to read, and held my attention all the way until the emotional conclusion.
Fans of the paranormal genre, especially those with a hankering for werewolves, be sure to check out Before The Moon Rises. The material is well written, provides a dash of humor and spice to keep things interesting, and has enough emotion to satisfy the romantic at heart.
