He is a century old legend who haunts the present day...
When Julian Winston, aka Shadow Hunter, is denied payment from a contract murder, he seeks restitution with the head of his client. In turn, he is offered a priceless commodity. Clara Singer, his client's wife. Never could he have imagined the abduction of Clara to ignite a dormant flame only she fueled to life.
A week of captivity brings Clara to the precipice of comfort and deception. She finds a disturbing calm in Julian as she faces the truth behind her abduction. Once released, she quickly returns to Julian. She has become a new target for murder.
Together, Clara and Julian are on the run, keeping a hairbreadth step ahead of a cold, merciless killer. They find shelter in the undisputable attraction between each other, even as the threat of death hovers around. Can they endure the pursuit for a chance at love? Or will death claim them both?
Clara doesn’t know the man she married at all. Her charming husband Chris is a criminal of the worst kind, who hires an assassin and then fails to pay him. When Julian comes to collect, Chris offers him Clara as payment. But Julian is no mere assassin.
Kara Wills delivers another spellbinding tale full of betrayal and intrigue. Clara is an innocent pawn in the war between Julian and Chris, but she is NEVER a victim. Julian is anything but a stereotypical murder-for-hire. The characters are fully drawn, full of fire and emotion and conviction. As Clara opens her eyes to the world around her, the lines between hero and villain become blurred…and reversed. Julian is a dark hero of the first rate. The reader will be drawn into a world where Old World honor still shines a light in the New World darkness.
True love arrives at the oddest times, in the oddest ways. Your heart breaks for Clara and Julian – their love when she’s married to another, a scumbag who wants her dead. Julian finds himself morphing from assassin to protector of the one who restores his heart and soul. You really really have to see if they get their Happily-Ever-After. Ms. Wills is a master of creating emotional tension and suspense, and drawing the reader clear to the end. There is no down time in this book.
You experience all the emotion along with the characters. The secondary characters, and the villains, are fully drawn and contribute well to the tension. The book is relatively dark in tone, but never overwhelmingly so. You trust the author to get you through, and she never disappoints. I love Clara’s and Julian’s story, and heartily recommend this author to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful tale. This is the second book I’ve read and reviewed by this author, and definitely think she’s a keeper!
