When Pittsburgh native Amber Kensington moves to the Texas Gulf coast to take a job, hurricane season is the last thing on her mind. That is until a massive storm named Ike appears, destined to make a direct hit just miles from her apartment. Evacuation is the answer, but what happens when your car won’t cooperate?

Alex Clarke has seen his share of tropical weather, but it never gets any easier. A childhood experience with lightning has left him fearful of storms. Still, his greatest desire is to participate in his church’s outreach program and assist hurricane victims. Now he’s discovered his new neighbor is stranded. Can he convince her to go with him? And can Amber and Alex find God’s comfort and healing despite the raging storm?

For those of us who’ve never experienced a hurricane, seeing them and their repercussions on news clips – especially when in another country, it is hard to conceive the reality. Ms Rossi may base her story on true events, but from the start the intermittent black humour she uses, helps to highlight the seriousness of Amber’s situation. Ms Rossi cleverly uses a newbie to the area to get her information across to her reader and thus enhances the rising tension. Of course nothing goes to plan. From her car breaking down to grasping relatives, whose greed had got her into this predicament.

The approaching hurricane brings back memories of an experience Alex would rather forget. Being up a tree as a child when it was struck by lightning wasn’t something he’d forget on a hurry, so how, he wondered would he cope will a category three hurricane knocking on his door? He didn’t want to find out . But, then, who would look after his parishioners in the storm’s aftermath if he did what he wanted to, and high-tailed it out of the area?

Ms Rossi has a wonderful way with words, and just when you think she’s surpassed herself, she comes out with another gem, as she parallels the emotional storm Alex and Amber are experiencing with the approaching Hurricane. And as if that isn’t enough, up pops an ‘old girlfriend’.

With Ms Rossi’s expertise Amber and Alex have major issues to deal with before they finally accept their past and let it go. To find out how they do this, you’ll have to read the book.
