On stage, band leader Zach Zacata controls the emotions of thousands of fans, but he can't control his middle-aged body. When he has a heart attack, best friend and sometime lover Lauren Westover provides a place where Zach can heal. As Zach watches Lauren pursue her dreams, he finds the courage to fulfill his childhood fantasy to explore faraway galaxies--at least through a telescope--by building a kids' program called Stars in Your Eyes.
The glitz, glamour, and hype of the entertainment world rules Zach Zacate’s life creating health issues along with issues about permanent commitment. In his determination to put his band Siege back at the top of the charts, he makes some trade-offs that skate close to selling his soul.
Lauren, wanting to shield her eighteen-year-old son from the dark side of playing with the band along with wanting to revive a connection with Zach, becomes the publicist for Siege. Her years of competing in beauty pageants immunes her to the advances of insincere men and helps her to “never let them see you sweat”. But she suffers many defeats as she strives toward her long range goal.
Neither Zach nor Lauren appealed to me in the beginning. I wondered if anyone so steeped in the depraved atmosphere in which they worked could ever get back to a true, pure love like Lauren experienced in her teens.
Genene Valleau does a good job of showing that it is “hard to go back and undo the choices you made”. As she peels the artificial layers away, she reveals some most interesting surprises about some of the characters not the least of which is the character who turns out to be the real antagonist.
Numerous secondary characters swoop in and out of Zach’s and Lauren’s lives but only a few of them have significant impact on the unraveling of the complex events that finally get Zach and Lauren to a happy-ever-after.
Star in Your Eyes is truly a story relevant to modern day society where life is always supposed to be one great big party -- interesting reading.
