The true threat lies within the heart…
Kate McAuley once thought Lucas Barone loved her, and returned that love for all she was worth—until the day he walked away without a word. Now, four years later she answers a knock on her door and finds Luke on her doorstep, broken, bleeding and unconscious. He brings with him all kind of emotions, and all kinds of questions. Where has he been? Why did he leave? And what’s an accountant doing with wounds like these?
As a covert ops specialist with the U.S. government, Luke deceived, betrayed and conned so many people he couldn’t keep them straight—except Kate. Their time together was magical, until the call came and he was forced to walk away. For four long years, memories of her have kept him alive and sane. Now, hunted by his own government, desperate and injured, Kate is the only one he can trust.
Kate’s innocent phone call for help sets in motion an evil that reaches the highest echelons of political power. With accusations of murder and treason hanging over their heads, it’ll take every ounce of Luke’s training, intelligence—and Kate’s trust—to keep them alive.
In this edge-of-your-seat suspense, Kate McAuley gets a blast from the past as she finds an injured Lucas Barone at her door. Having had her heart broken by Luke in the past, she is reluctant to allow him into her home, but his injuries make it hard for her to turn him away. A covert ops specialist for the US government, Luke is a man full of secrets. He never intended to hurt Kate, but had no choice and when he left over eighteen months ago and has never told her the truth about his job and reasons for leaving. When he is attacked he heads to Kate’s hoping that she will let him in and help him. But someone thinks Luke knows too much and is out to kill him. Once his location is discovered, Luke finds himself trying to protect Kate and knows he must tell her the truth about his occupation. Kate reluctantly trusts Luke to keep her safe, but needs some answers before she can forgive him. Kate and Luke find themselves facing danger as they go on the run and seek to bring down Luke’s enemies.
Deception was a wonderful story full of suspense, romance, emotion, and more. I really enjoyed the chemistry and relationship between Kate and Luke as they worked to overcome their mistrust and pain of the past. Their story was a very emotional one and I was touched by their love and the events of their lives. I felt for these characters and couldn’t help wanting them to succeed in their endeavors.
The characters of Deception may have caught my interest, but the suspense of the plot held on and wouldn’t let me go until I read the very last page. I could hardly wait to see what would happen next as I was caught up in the story and enjoyed every twist-and-turn. Deception is a fabulous romantic suspense!
