Review: One For The Road

One For The Road
by Crystal Green

Drive me wild!

A dull job, boring relationships. Life was a yawn when Lucy Christie decided to hit the road with her best friend. But she didn’t know just how much her dream vacation – a drive down Route 66 in search of no-questions-asked, guilt-free sexual encounters –would shake things up.

Her first conquest was Joshua, a cowboy with fancy boots and hips made for sin, a man who filled in every gap in her previously limited sexual education. In fact, he was so good, Lucy regretted having to give him up. But when she tried moving on to the next “drive-by seduction,” her demanding lover tagged along… intent on seducing her stop after stop!

I know, from the blurb it seems that this book is all about the sex, and nothing about a relationship. Surprisingly, you would be wrong! There was an amazing amount of emotional depth throughout the entire book, and I fell right into the adventure each person was experiencing.

Lucy had so much depth, and I just adored her. She’s lived her whole life by plotting out every minute of every single day. She’s had her heart broken too many times, and she’s tired of putting it on the line only to have it handed back to her. I can so relate to her feelings of inadequacy and the desire to break out of a self-imposed shell. Sometimes, it seems the only thing holding her together as her world goes crazy is her determination; sheer stubborn grit! Her chance meeting with Joshua in a diner along the way to their first destination has her questioning her rigidly structured life. She begins to wonder… What harm could there be in letting go for once and just enjoying the moment?

Joshua is on his own journey of discovery out on Route 66. When he sees Lucy in that diner, somehow all his fantasies seem to crystallize to be represented by her. He’s dealing with his own demons and dark dangerous emotions that are threatening to take his sanity. For someone who was always in control of his life and circumstances, to find himself no longer in control is obviously difficult. At times the heat from his anger practically jumped from the pages and singed my fingers. Who could really blame him for his anger? When circumstances and a massive betrayal of trust send him out on the road, running into soft, sweet and sometimes wicked Lucy seems to be just what he needs to rebuild his confidence.

This book is filled with complex and touching relationships. From the main story of Lucy and Josh to the secondary tale of Carmen and Eddie, you’re never left wanting. I loved the friendship that was closer to sisterhood that Lucy and her best friend Carmen share. They know each other so well and yet don’t seem to know themselves as well. When each character finds themselves wanting more than the superficial relationships they were originally seeking, Crystal Green displays her talent to beautifully write the depth of a possible loving relationship.

So, not only were the love scenes hot, but there was a depth of emotion that was incredible. The simultaneous relationship being built between Carmen and her vacation “fling” Eddie was actually more sweet than spicy, with their own doubts and insecurities as they got to know one another better, without detracting from the heat and conflict of Lucy and Josh’s story. I greatly enjoyed this book and find I’m glad I picked it up. I look forward to more offerings from Ms. Crystal Green.

Gee, what a blurb! But the review gave more insight to the book and I already have one which I enjoyed from this author, so I'd like to give this one a whirl too. By the way, I'm still waiting to see who won the 4/8 book, the winner is still not yet posted.

Yes, the back of Blazes don't do the books justice. Why I love to go the bookstore and browse.
